# Perito Grid

## Peer review, paid and on time.

We are building the marketplace where journals find vetted expert reviewers in days, not months, and reviewers get paid.

*Perito*, from the Latin *peritus*, means "expert". The Grid is the network that connects them to the manuscripts that need them.

- Reviewers: [create your reviewer account](https://app.peritogrid.com/register) (free) or [sign in](https://app.peritogrid.com/login)
- Editors and journals: [book a demo](https://calendar.app.google/9CvFrEGx4pe2wGqQ7) or [set up your journal](mailto:onboarding@peritogrid.com?subject=Set%20up%20our%20journal%20on%20Perito%20Grid) by writing to onboarding@peritogrid.com. Diamond and platinum open access journals use Perito for free, with unpaid reviews.

## The problem

### Nobody wants to review any more, and editors are paying for it in months.

The same few hundred people in each field get every request, and they are burning out. First decisions take months, and authors leave for faster journals. Our co-founder Philip Croon reviews for cardiology journals and sits on an editorial board, so he sees this from both sides.

- **22%** of review invitations were accepted in 2024, down from 43% in 2018.
- **4.5** invitations for every review an editor secures, nearly double 2018.
- **407** days that editors wait, per 100 invitations, on people who decline or never reply.

## It has been tested

### One journal already pays its reviewers. Decisions came 85% faster, and quality held.

Biology Open's Fast & Fair programme pays freelance reviewers £220 per manuscript. Over 18 months its paid reviews were faster than conventional ones, and the reviewers were neither softer nor harsher.

- **85%** less time to a first decision.
- **31%** of papers were rejected after paid review, against 32% after conventional review. Paying made reviews faster, not softer.
- **261** papers, July 2024 to December 2025: 170 with paid reviewers and 91 with conventional ones.

## What we do

### A marketplace for peer review, in one place.

Journals post a manuscript and invite vetted experts, matched on their published work, or their own trusted reviewers. Reviewers are paid for every review, straight to their own bank account.

1. **The journal posts.** The editor uploads the manuscript and says how many reviewers it needs and how many days they get. A credit is used only when a reviewer accepts.
2. **Experts are matched.** Reviewers are suggested on the work on their ORCID record, with their track record next to each name. The editor chooses who to invite; we never assign anonymously.
3. **A reviewer accepts.** The invitation shows the abstract, the fee and the deadline. Accepting opens the manuscript and holds a slot for the reviewer.
4. **The review comes in.** On the journal's own review form, with major and minor comments marked right on the PDF, plus overall comments and a recommendation.
5. **Paid and rated.** The fee goes to the reviewer's bank account through Stripe, and the editor rates the review.

- **OJS integration.** Run your journal on Open Journal Systems? Perito can be integrated with it, so reviews fit into the editorial workflow you already have.
- **Open peer review, if you want it.** We support the open peer review movement. It is opt-in: closed review stays the default, and journals that want open reviews can switch them on.

## Get started

### Start as a reviewer or as a journal.

**For reviewers: get paid for every review you write.** Creating your account is free and takes 2 minutes. Connect ORCID, so journals find you on your published work. Accept only what fits you; the fee goes straight to your bank account. [Create your reviewer account](https://app.peritogrid.com/register).

**For editors and journals: reviewers in days, not months.** We set up your journal's workspace and invite your team. Buy credits, invite matched experts or your own reviewers, and pay per delivered review. **Diamond or platinum open access? Your journal uses Perito for free: expert matching, invitations and the review workflow. Reviewers are not paid for these reviews.** [Book a demo](https://calendar.app.google/9CvFrEGx4pe2wGqQ7) (a 30-minute call to see Perito and set up your journal), or [write to us](mailto:onboarding@peritogrid.com?subject=Set%20up%20our%20journal%20on%20Perito%20Grid) at onboarding@peritogrid.com.

## Team

### We built and sold a company together.

- **Matthijs van de Vijver, CTO.** Co-founder and CTO of Hubby e-sim. Development lead of DGTL Health, the platform behind our previous exit. Builds the product.
